Description

Switzerland is a country of intense natural beauty, dominated by mountain peaks, rolling meadows and spectacular lakes. Most travelers come here to experience the scenery and are also pleasantly surprised by the cultural treasures found in the cities and tourist centers. Places like Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Lausanne offer world-class museums, vibrant art scenes, wonderful old architecture, great food and all the luxuries that come with great cities. There are also many smaller towns and resorts that can serve as a base for those who want to enjoy the scenery.

The main attraction for most visitors is the Swiss Alps. The full impact of the mountains is difficult to appreciate without immersing yourself in the scenery, but fortunately there are many ways that can be achieved. Many scenic driving tours lead into the mountains and along lakes, or for the more adventurous there are all sorts of hiking trails. In winter skiing is a favourite pastime for locals and visitors alike.

Many travellers start their journey in Zurich, Switzerland's largest city and a major transport hub. To see the city take a stroll through the Old Town, where there are many interesting old buildings, such as the Baroque Zunfthaus zur Meisen which houses the ceramics collection of the Swiss National Museum, Bürkliplatz, the Town Hall and the Church of Our Lady . Zurich is also known for its shopping, with many upmarket shops along the Bahnhofstrasse.

The picturesque town of Geneva is situated on the shores of Lake Geneva, surrounded by mountains. The Old Town rises above the city on the left bank, dwarfed by the Cathedral. Nearby are the Museum of Old Geneva, the Monument of the Reformation and the Place du Bourg-de-Four. Basel and Lausanne, two other popular destinations, have also preserved beautiful old towns and warrant a visit.

Lucerne also has a well-preserved medieval town centre and can serve as a good base for exploring some of the nearby mountainous terrain, including Mount Pilatus. Visitors can choose to take the cable car up the mountain and return on the cog railway. For great mountain views, also head to Rigi, one of the most famous points of interest around. From the top of the cable car there are many hiking trails.

Switzerland is a popular winter ski destination with many ski resorts including Grindelwald, Gstaad, Mürren, Zermatt and the famous St Moritz. These mountains are also frequented by mountaineers, and in summer most ski resorts cater to hikers or trekkers. Close to Zermatt is the famous Matterhorn, which regularly challenges experienced climbers.
